Graduation Requirements
Polices of the College
Read these policies with care. Failure to complete any single requirement can interfere with graduation.
College Language Competence Requirement
College Physical Education Requirement
Completion of a College Degree Application, which is available at the Office of the University Registrar (Admin 103) or the advising reception desk, and is due by Friday of the first week of the quarter of graduation. Turn in this form to either the registrar or the advising desk.
Note: If the name on the diploma will not match the name on the transcript, complete a Change of Name/Address form. If you have questions, call the University Registrar at 773-702-7891.
College Deadlines
- Declaring Majors/Minors
- Honors papers/projects: check the catalog for individual program deadlines.
- Grades for courses taken prior to the quarter of graduation (e.g., Is, blanks) are due in the Registrar's Office by Friday of ninth week of the quarter of graduation. Since Summer Quarter graduation deadlines change annually, check with a College adviser or the University Registrar.
- Grades for courses taken during the quarter of graduation are due in the Registrar's Office by Friday of tenth week (this can be a problem for GSB courses). The exception to this is if the course is not required for graduation. Since Summer Quarter graduation deadlines change annually, check with a College adviser or the University Registrar.
- Bursar balances of more than $200 must be cleared by Friday of ninth week of the quarter of graduation.
Preparing to Graduate
By the start of the quarter of graduation, you should have:
- Confirmed that College language and PE requirements are completed and posted to the transcript
- Confirmed that all AP, placement, and transfer credit is posted to the transcript
To order AP scores, contact the College Board
- Confirmed that all course names, numbers, and grades listed on the transcript are correct. The transcript becomes permanently immutable during the summer after graduation.
- Confirmed that the information listed under "Previous Institution" on the transcript is correct
- Updated a College adviser about the status of Qs, Is, Ws, or blanks in required courses

Note: Students who do not meet all graduation requirements by the appropriate deadlines will be removed from the convocation list, assessed a cancellation fee, and required to submit a new degree application prior to the anticipated quarter of graduation.
College Convocation Ceremony
Only students who have completed all degree requirements can march in the convocation ceremony. This includes students on leave of absence. Convocation tickets are available on your class web page.
The diploma and what it looks like
Undergraduate email accounts, personal web pages, etc. are deactivated two quarters after graduation except for students continuing in graduate programs or as employees of the University. The University of Chicago Alumni Association offers free, permanent email addresses.
