Graduate School of Business

General Information

Students in the College may register for courses in the Graduate School of Business although College students may not audit GSB courses. Students taking business courses are generally subject to GSB rules, procedures, and deadlines. In some cases these will differ significantly from the College. For specific information, refer to the Chicago GSB Student Handbook (this is a PDF).

Registration for Regular GSB Classes

Registration for GSB courses is a process that should begin in the quarter preceding the one in which the class will meet. Consult with a College adviser about taking courses at the GSB.

Submit a petition for consent to take a GSB course in the quarter prior to registration. The petition should include the reasons for taking the course and a list of relevant course work or experience. List an alternative course in case there is no space left in the first choice. Address the petition to Jean Treese, Associate Dean of Students in the College, and deliver it to the advising reception desk

Bring the signed petition and UCID to the GSB Office of the Dean of Students during second week. There are designated registration dates each quarter, so check the schedule posted on the bulletin board next to the advising reception desk in Harper or contact the GSB.

Note: GSB courses are available to College students if space remains, after all GSB students have registered. The instructor cannot give consent to register for a course. Class attendance does not constitute registration. Registration must be processed in person through the GSB Dean of Students Office.

Registration for " College-only" GSB Classes

Petition for " College-only" sections of GSB courses as for other GSB courses. If your petition is approved, you will be registered in the course, unless the class limit has already been reached.

Drops

Drop courses at the GSB Dean of Students Office by the College deadline of Friday of third week (even though GSB students must drop by the end of second week). Courses cannot be dropped online.

Withdrawal

The deadline to request a W from the instructor is Friday of ninth week. Course withdrawals are processed through the GSB Dean of Students Office and not by individual arrangements with professors.

Exams

Follow GSB schedules/procedures.

Graduating students should know that some final exams in the GSB are given on the same day and time as College Convocation. In such cases College students should not plan on being allowed to take the final exam at an alternate date or time.

Grading

Quality grades are issued automatically. Students may request pass/fail grading by Friday of fourth week through the GSB Dean of Students Office. The GSB Deans and Faculty have approved the use of +/- grading effective autumn 2006. (Note that an A+ will be calculated as a 4.00 in the College.)

Using GSB Courses in the Degree Program

Students are limited to six professional school course registrations on the transcript (whether or not the courses are completed). Up to four of these can count toward the forty-two credits required in an undergraduate program. For permission to count these courses in the major, petition the undergraduate program chair before taking the course. In addition:

GSB courses taken by undergraduate students will not count toward an MBA at the GSB (and probably elsewhere), although any grades received will probably be considered by a graduate admissions committee.

Graduating seniors should be aware that the GSB does not meet the University Registrar's tenth week deadline for final grades. Therefore, if a GSB class is one of the forty-two courses required for graduation, the student should plan on graduating in a subsequent quarter.

Tuition

College students are charged tuition at the College rate. Refer to the printed Time Schedules or the Office of the University Bursar for current tuition rates.

Note: Success in GSB courses depends as much on prior business experience as on academic ability, which can put College students at a disadvantage. Expect that grades awarded for professional school classes will be considered by admissions committees in subsequent applications to graduate or professional school.
