The Law School
General Information
Students in the College may register for Law School courses beyond the many college courses (such as Law, Letters, and Society courses) that are taught in the Law School. College students may not audit Law School courses. Students taking Law School courses are subject to Law School rules, procedures, and deadlines. In some cases these differ significantly from the College. For specific information, refer to the Law School Student Handbook.
Registration
Begin this procedure in the quarter prior to the planned registration. Consult with a College adviser about the advisability of taking courses at the Law School .
Submit a petition for consent to take a Law School course in the quarter prior to registration. The petition should include the reasons for taking the course and a list of relevant course work/experience. Address the petition to Jean Treese, Associate Dean of Students and deliver it to the advising reception desk.
Refer to the Law School calendar to determine the registration period start date and fill out a Non-Law School Student Permission to Register form.
Discuss entry into the class with the instructor. If consent is received, ask him or her to sign the Permission to Register form. Take both the signed Law School and College petitions to the Law School Registrar (L509) by Friday of first week and receive a green registration form.
Submit this green registration form to the Office of the University Registrar ( Admin 103) by Friday of third week.
Drops
Law School courses may be dropped through Friday of third week. However after the end of first week, consent is required from the Law School Registrar. Documentation that the course has been dropped must then be presented to the Office of the University Registrar by the College's Friday of third week course drop deadline in order for the course to be removed from the transcript.
Withdrawal
Students can withdraw from a class up to the final event per the College policy.
Exams
Follow the Law School exam schedule and policies.
Grading
Quality grades are issued automatically, although students may request pass/fail grading from the instructor before Friday of fifth week. The instructor will give consent in writing. Law School grading scales differ from those in the College.
Using Law School Courses in the Degree Program
Students are limited to six professional school course registrations on the transcript (whether or not the courses are completed). Up to three of these can count toward the forty-two credits required in an undergraduate program. For permission to count these courses in the major, petition the undergraduate program chair before taking the course.
Tuition
College students pay at the College rate. Refer to the printed Time Schedules or the Office of the University Bursar for current tuition rates.
Note: Professional school courses are not indicated as such on the transcript, although each transcript has a key to understanding course identification codes. Expect that grades awarded for professional school classes will be considered by admissions committees in subsequent applications to graduate or professional school.
