Note: Summer course registration follows different procedures and dates and is administered by the Graham School of General Studies

Course Request (bidding)

The course request process occurs during the eighth week of each quarter (except summer). Students who are not restricted by an administrative office and who have had the required quarterly/annual advising conference are eligible to participate in this process.

During eighth week, students access the course request Web site where they select and rank classes on a scale of 1 (most desired) to (least desired). They also indicate the total number of courses, up to four, into which they wish to enroll. During tenth week students are “resolved” (see below) into classes.

Students are automatically enrolled into certain course sequences; typically general education and language courses. A list of these batch-enrolled courses is posted online each quarter at the start of eighth week. Depending on the quarter, students may drop out of certain sequences before requesting other courses.

The course request Web site is available twenty-four hours per day starting at 9:00 a.m. on Monday of eighth week and extending through 5:00 p.m. on Friday of eighth week. During this period, students may update courses and rankings as often as they choose without penalty. The date, time of day, or order in which students log into the system is irrelevant to the outcome.

Course Resolution

Course request is followed by an internal process known as course resolution. Resolution takes each student's class year and course ranking into account. First priority is given to fourth-year students, and then third-year students, followed by second-year and then first-year students.

Add/Drop (unmoderated)

The unmoderated (live) add/drop period begins Monday of exam week and continues through Friday of the first week of the subsequent quarter. Courses awarded during course resolution are visible and available to be dropped upon login. In addition, students may add courses that have not already reached preset seat limits and that do not require instructor consent. Unmoderated add/drop is processed in real-time, meaning that, unlike the course request process, it is a "first-come, first-served" process and courses may open or close instantaneously. The system does not permit students to register for more than four courses at any time.

Add/Drop (moderated)

Moderated add/drop begins second week and lasts until Friday of third week. During this period students may add courses with instructor consent only by using the pink Registration Consent Form. This form is available in the Office of the University Registrar (Adm 103) and at the advising reception desk in Harper. The deadline to submit this form to the registrar is Friday of third week. After this date students may not add any class except by petition to the dean of students.

Students may drop courses without penalty through Friday of the third week. Drops made in sequence courses cancel the remainder of that sequence. Drops made after Friday of third week are called withdrawals and appear on the transcript with grade of W. In such cases no refund is available. Note the established tuition refund schedules.

Taking a Fifth Class

Upperclass students seeking to register for a fifth class should attend the class and obtain a signed pink slip. Petition the dean of students in the middle of third week to register for the class and attach the signed pink slip to the petition form. The extra tuition for a fifth class is equal to the charge for one class. Refer to the Office of the Bursar Web page for current tuition rates.
