James Hevia's research deals with nineteenth century European empire building and its impact on Asia. His current research deals with the production of authoritative knowledge about China and Central Asia by diplomats, missionaries, and military intelligence officers, and its relation to contemporary area studies.

Michelle Murray has research and teaching interests in international relations theory, critical security studies, international history, and governance and international organization. She is currently preparing a book manuscript on the struggle for recognition in international politics that explores how the desire for social recognition motivates states' national security strategies,with particular attention to the arming decisions of the great powers before the First World War.
