Public Policy Studies in the College
Internships
Obtaining academic course credit for an internship in Public Policy . . .
- Requires securing a policy-related internship,
- Registering for the course PBPL 29600, the Internship in Public Policy Studies, and
- Writing the internship paper* under the guidance of the public policy studies program director.
Registration for PBPL 29600 is by consent only. This means that the student cannot register for this course on the web, but must meet with their college advisor for approval and to complete the College Reading and Research Course Form. Students then obtain the signature of the Public Policy Studies Director on College Reading and Research Course Form and submit the form to the Registrars Office. Once this form is signed and submitted, the student is officially registered PBPL 29600. Students completing internships over the summer quarter may register for PBPL 29600 in the following autumn quarter.
IMPORTANT! Students are advised to receive prior permission from the Public Policy Studies Director before beginning any internship they plan to use in conjunction with PBPL 29600. Paid internships and internships with for-profit organizations cannot be used for academic credit.
THE INTERNSHIP PAPER
The internship paper is a policy paper (not more than 10 pages) on your internship experience highlighting some aspect of policy as it relates to the internship organization or agency. *For more detailed requirements for the internship paper, please contact the Public Policy Studies Program Director.
The student-intern consults with the program director periodically for guidance on preparation of the internship paper and then submits a final draft of paper to the Public Policy Offices before the end of the quarter of registration for PBPL 29600. The internship paper is graded Pass/Fail; the internship paper grade is the grade for the course PBPL 29600.
